This year’s Model United Nations team, representing the Kingdom of Denmark, the Republic of Ecuador and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria represented SF State at the 74th Annual MUNFW Conference.  This year’s theme was “Between Chaos and Consensus: Moving the Sustainable Development Goals Forward.”  SFSU IR Delegates staffed the Security Council, International Court of Justice (ICJ), General Assembly, Third Committee and Committees on the Environment, the Status of Women and the Commission on Science & Technology for Development.  We also had representation this year with the World Press.

Our team's work in ICJ was nothing short of brilliant:  we won both cases (Denmark and Ecuador) and Dan Buschmeyer, for his outstanding work, was elected Rapporteur.

This year’s team was led by Dan Buschmeyer  and included Kenza Idrissi, Pich Moni Neath Lay, Dan Kryzen Jacob, Paige Mathews, Charles Pickering, Muhammad Sayeed, Shirley Quan, Nova Solan, Andre Rosenburg, Rodliam Suspene, Ricardo Miles, Saajan Paudel, Emi Dotson, Karima Aucar, Ashanti Robinson and Adam Mimou.  More photographs will follow next week on our return to campus.

Special thanks to alumna Estefani Morales who helped organize the fundraising drive to support this year’s team, alumnus Martin Morales for his excellent preparation and endless support for IR students, Alexandra Theodotou for all she does to keep us on track, and our fearless leader, Dr. Burcu Ellis.

MUNFW is the oldest and most prestigious Model UN on the west coast and held its conference April 11th – 15th at the Burlingame Hyatt Regency Hotel.  Next year’s conference preparation will commence in late October.  Inquiries should be directed to Professor Ellis.

74th ANNUAL MUNFW AGENDA

The Security Council included Denmark and Algeria as part of the E-10, the reason why our delegation petitioned to represent them.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) featured a pending case for the Ecuador delegation on Aerial Herbicide Spraying (Ecuador v. Colombia).  Two other cases were heard:  The Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime
of Genocide (Gambia v. Myanmar) and Whaling in the Antarctic (Australia v. Japan).

This year, the General Assembly’s agenda included (1) Reassessing the Financial Architecture of the United Nations, (2) Exploring the Impact of Emerging Technologies on Disarmament and PGA Special Session on “The Impact of Climate Change on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).”  Special Session is designed for delegates to practice quick thinking and diplomacy skills, relying on their country research to craft policy in real time.  PGA was held Sunday.

GA’s Third Committee’s agenda focused on (1) Addressing Rural Poverty, (2) Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and (3) Ensuring the Rights and Safety of Journalists.

The UN Environmental Assembly focused itself on three important issues: Mitigating Environmental Impacts of War, the Maintenance of Sustainable Fisheries and Advancing Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.

The Commission on Science & Technology for Development delivered its report on Ensuring access and sustainable use of critical minerals, Harnessing Space Technology for Sustainable Development and Enhancing Digital Protection of Human Rights.

The Commission on the Status of Women agenda focused on three critical items:  (1) Providing Equitable Access to Education for Women and Girls, (2) Protecting the Rights of Migrant Women and Children and (3) Defining Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.  Rodliam Suspene was awarded the Certificate for Best Resolution.
